The community is invited to stop by the Nature Center for an afternoon of fun and learning, including:
- Free wood oven pizza and cookies (while supplies last)
- Free hands-on activities for kids
- The opportunity to view the site where the playscape will be built
- Project renderings and images that bring the design to life
- Short, casual presentations at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. about the vision and next steps
Nestled into the woods overlooking Dobbins Creek’s north branch, the future Nature Playscape will offer an exciting destination for children and families to discover, explore and connect at Austin’s Jay C. Hormel Nature Center.
In 2026, the Friends of the Hormel Nature Center is committing $200,000 to build the Nature Playscape about a half mile from the Nature Center’s parking lot along the Black Trail across from a restored native prairie on the way to the observation tower. More financial support is needed to make the Nature Playscape a reality. The Friends hopes to raise at least $190,000 to fully fund the project targeted for construction in late-2026.
Modeled after similar nature-play facilities, including one in Rochester, the project’s cost is driven by the need for play features that are safe yet fun, age appropriate and created from materials that are durable to ensure many years of free enjoyment by the public.
According to the National Wildlife Federation, when children play and learn in nature, research indicates that they do so with more vigor,
engagement, imagination and cooperation than in wholly artificial environments. Symptoms also are reduced for attention deficit and depression. Experts
agree that children need access to nature the same way they need good nutrition and adequate sleep.
Investing in our community through projects like the Nature Playscape enriches the lives of our community members and visitors. It also keeps Austin a great place for children and families to explore, connect and discover. We invite you to get involved by attending upcoming events and consider contributing to this exciting project.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Playground
What is the outdoor nature playground?
A nature-based play space designed to encourage imagination, movement, and connection to the outdoors through natural materials and creative, hands-on features.
Who will benefit from it?
Children, families, home school groups, and visitors of all abilities—anyone who uses the Hormel Nature Center.
Where will the playground be located?
The playground will be located on Nature Center grounds in an area designed to connect play with existing trails and habitats. Several locations were evaluated to find the best fit while meeting required airport zoning regulations. Because of these restrictions, the playground could not be built directly next to the Nature Center building. Instead, it has been thoughtfully incorporated into the surrounding landscape just a few minutes’ walk from the Nature Center, creating a natural extension of the site’s educational and outdoor experience.
Will this replace existing programs or spaces?
No—this enhances the Nature Center experience and supports its educational mission.
Are there bathrooms by the playground?
No. Restrooms are available inside the Nature Center building, just a few minutes’ walk from the playground.
Will it be free to use?
Yes—like the Nature Center itself, access will remain free.
Will it be open year-round?
Yes, designed for all seasons with features that invite winter and summer play.
What age levels is the playground geared toward?
The space has features that allow younger children, older kids, and families to play and explore together.
Who guided the design?
The playground concept was developed with a professional partner who specializes in nature-based playgrounds, working closely with Nature Center leadership to ensure the design reflects the Center’s mission, landscape, and educational values.
Funding & Money
Where will the money come from?
From a mix of community donations, Friends of the Nature Center, local business support, and private gifts. This is a community-driven project, not funded through regular operating dollars.
Will this take money away from existing Nature Center programs?
No. Funds for the playground are raised specifically for this project and will not reduce support for exhibits, staff, or education programs.
How will donations be used?
For design, building materials, construction, and long-term durability—not for general operations.
Maintenance & Operations
Who will maintain the playground?
The Nature Center and City of Austin will oversee care with support from trained staff and community partners—just like trails and grounds today.
Will maintenance be expensive?
The design focuses on durable, natural materials that age well and require less replacement than traditional equipment. In addition, a dedicated maintenance fund has already been established to support the long-term care and upkeep of the playground.
How will safety be handled?
The playground will be professionally designed and installed with appropriate safety standards while still allowing adventurous, nature-based play.
Will this affect wildlife or the quiet character of the site?
The location and design were chosen to respect sensitive habitats and maintain the peaceful feel of the Nature Center.
